The defense and rebuilding of democratic politics and discourse, however, requires sustained intellectual engagement. The early days of the internet inspired hopes for a more egalitarian and democratic society with decentralized control over information and communications a society in which the wisdom of the crowd would allow for the best ideas to float to the top.
